Excited about the new renovations! -
Kim LeMieux - Laurel Homes, Inc.
"Our family has loved Ladera Oaks for the last six years and we are very excited about the recent renovations. We are a tennis family and the tennis clubhouse has been focal point of many great tournaments and events - no other facility in the area offers the viewing, cooking and partying environment that makes tennis at Ladera so much fun. We have also enjoyed the pools, PSA swim team, the fitness center and casual Sunday night barbecues. Best of all are the friendships we have made at Ladera Oaks."[edit] [delete]

USA Swim Team is great for our son -
Fritzi & David Marston - Exec. PriceWaterhouseCoopers
"Our son, Gary, age 8 (Trinity Elementary) just joined the USA Swim Team this year at Ladera Oaks. He was previously a PSA member, but this was our first year on the USA team. He had such a great time this year! He's built great friendships on the team, has shaved seconds off his times, and qualified for the Regional Championships two weekends ago."[edit] [delete]

Best swim school for kids -
Rhonda Bucklin - Oak Knoll & GeoKids Mom
"We've been members for little more than 1 year and our entire family uses the club extensively. I'm constantly surprised at how often I find myself at the club. We ultimately joined LO after we had spent almost 3 years taking swim lessons with the Jim Gorman Swim School and we became interested in the summer swim program. My young children, 6 and 4, enjoy the swim program and I enjoy the tennis program which brought me back to game that I hadn't played much in 25 years. My 6 year old also participates in weekly group tennis lessons with coaches Ray and Bobby who are amazing and great with both kids and adults. LO is a low-key club with a great community."[edit] [delete]

Family Friendly Atmosphere -
Anonymous - VP Business Development, Expert CEO & Nueva School Mom
"Our whole family loves Ladera Oaks! After many years at another club, we were looing for a me family-friendly atmosphere. We joined Ladera Oaks four years ago and immediately we knew we'd made he right decision. We've made new friends, and we often hang out by the pool with families we know from school, synagogue and sports teams. Our daughter originally came for swim lessons after a scary pool incident, and after just a few months she joined the swim team, which she loves! Our son has developed beautiful tennisstrokes thanks to Bobby's patient instruction and fun after-school clinics. The adult tennis program has been so welcoming, with options to play by day, in the evening and on weekends--my husband is now back on the court for Twilight Tennis, and my game has never been stronger!"[edit] [delete]
-
BBQ'in with Friends all summer.. -
Tina Bird - Oak Knoll & Hillview Mom
"Our entire family enjoys the tennis programs at Ladera, from the kid's clinics to usta to the great social events. We enjoy the pool as well and BBQ'ing with friends all summer long."[edit] [delete]

Swim Lessons & Swim Team -
Kathy & Brian LaPorte - New Leaf Venture Partners
"We have been members of Ladera since our two kids, now ages 12 and 14, were small. They loved Ladera over our previous club because the lower pool is so warm and kid friendly. The swim program and later th swim team were huge for our family. Our kids play junior tennis for Ladera and now are playing varsity for their school and some tournaments. Our daughter was one of only two girls to make a coed varsity team as a 6th grader in middle school, and part of that credit goes to the Ladera pros who taught her at age 4. Both of us play tennis regularly either socially or through the many year-round organized leagues. We have both captained teams and we have made increadible friends through Ladera tennis. We use the fitness center regularly, and lately I've started Masters swimming too. Our use of the club has evolved over time and all for the good. One of us is probablythere at least 6 days a week. We are excited about the renovations."[edit] [delete]

Hanging Out at the Pool -
Valorie Friedsam - Member
"The swim programs as well as just hanging out at the pool is great. All of my boys swim on the swim team. It's become a fun part of our summer. It is nice having 2 pools, so that recreational swim isn't interrupted by the swim practices. It's also fun BQing after being at the pool all day. The tennis programs are outstanding at all levels. My son, Justin, 11 plays on the junior tennis team and my other two boys Alex, 8 and Cameron 5 take the tennis clinics with Bobby and Ray. I play on USTA teams as well as lessons and clinics with both Bobby and Ray. Ladera Oaks' members are such a nice group of people. It's also great for my kids to get to know other kids from different schools as well as from their own."[edit] [delete]
-
Wednesday Night Tennis! -
Mike Stern Stern - Strategic Account Manager - Synopsys
"While everyone looks forward to weekends, some of us have discovered you don't have to wait. Wednesday evening's inter-club tennis is a ton of fun. The night starts with great tennis (3.5-4.5 all playing together), transitions to a feast prepared by one of the guys, along with drinks and dominoes. It's a really fun crowd, and by getting to know everyoe has made it very easy to get pick-up games on weekends."[edit] [delete]

Key Phrases from Ladera Oaks Swim & Tennis Club
Description of Category: Swim Centers
Swimming is the method by which humans (or other animals) move themselves through water without the aid of implements.
Swimming is a popular recreational activity, particularly in hot countries and in areas with natural watercourses, and a basic safety skill for those participating in on-water activities. Swimming pools are popular venues around the world, as are beaches, lakes, swimming holes and sometimes canals (although some of these locations may be dirty and/or dangerous).
Swimming is a good form of exercise. It is especially recommended to sufferers of arthritis and other osteopathic conditions, as the body is supported by the water and less stress is therefore placed on joints and bones.
History
While it is possible that some groups of humans knew how to swim in prehistoric times (though there is no archaeological evidence for this), the first records of humans swimming date from approximately 2500 BC in places such as Egypt, Greece, Assyria, and Rome; indeed citizens of Rome were taught to swim as boys. Australian Aborigines developed the fastest stroke,
known as the Australian Crawl (now widely known as front crawl). This stroke quickly spread and is still the fastest method of swimming.
Clothing
The desire or cultural demand of modesty together with the awkwardness or unsuitabilty of conventional clothing in the water led to the development of the swim suit (and in Victorian times, the bathing machine).
Nude swimming is done:
* at nudist areas
* during nudist hours in some swimming pools
* at (usually small) swimming pools in saunas
* without being formally allowed, at quiet places and hours; also called "skinny dipping"
* at private swimming pools and beaches, not visible for outsiders
Competition
Competitive swimming became popular in the 19th century, and is an event at the Summer Olympic Games. There are four swimming disciplines, and there are events for different distances in those disciplines.
The laws of competitive swimming place certain restrictions on the action used by the swimmer, depending on the event:
* Freestyle events place no restrictions on what action the competitors use. In practice, all freestyle events are swum using front crawl.
Events are held at distances from 50 metres to 1500 metres.
* Butterfly events require that the swimmer's actions retain bilateral symmetry (the left side of the body has to do the same as the right). It is swum over 100 and 200 metres. Butterfly, as it is typically
performed, is the most strenuous stroke to maintain and few
recreational swimmers can perform the stroke at all.
* Breaststroke, from which the butterfly stroke evolved, places the
additional restriction that the swimmer's hands must be pushed forward
together from the breast and that the elbows must remain under the water. It is the slowest stroke, and swum over 100 and 200 metres.
* Backstroke places no symmetry restrictions, but swimmers must lay on their back at all times (except when turning) to perform the stroke.
Backstroke is performed, in essence, as an inversion of the crawl - competitors swing their arms back over their shoulder, alternately, and pull through under the water to provide motive power, with a flutter kick. It is also swum over 100 and 200 metres.
Additionally, there are "medley" events where swimmers successively perform all four strokes. For the individual medley, one swimmer performs the various strokes in the order of butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and then freestyle. While the medley relays are swum by individual swimmers in
the following order: backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and freestyle.
Full rules are on the rules web page of FINA.
Competitive swimming has traditionally been dominated by the United States, but recently that dominance has been challenged by Australia, where swimming is a hugely popular recreational activity, and participant and spectator
sport. The success of Australian swimmers like Ian Thorpe and Kieren Perkins is reminiscent of Australia's previous golden age of swimming in the 1950s and 1960s, which saw the emergence of swimmers such as Shane Gould and Dawn Fraser.
There are also long-distance open-water swimming races (a 5 kilometre open-water event became part of the Olympic program in 2000), and some hardy individuals attempt very long-distance swims - such swimmers might cross the
English Channel, or circumnavigate Manhattan Island, but these are by no means the longest such feats.
Swimming is also a crucial part of other sports, such as surf lifesaving, water polo, synchronized swimming and triathlon.
Recreation
Recreational swimmers also use several strokes not used in competition - side stroke, which as the name suggests is performed on the swimmer's side,
dog paddle (also known as "human stroke", where the head is kept above the water and the arms alternately paddle underneath, and survival backstroke (more commonly known as "elementary backstroke", a stroke performed on the back, but using underwater recovery and a breaststroke-style kick. There are
many other commonly used recreational strokes such as the trudgeon, double trudgeon, trudgeon crawl, and inverted breastroke and doggy paddle.
Dangers
* Drowning, with extra risk when swimming alone, or swimming in the dark, or in the case of a dangerous tide or big waves.
* Shark attack.
* Being hit by lightning if staying in the water during a thunderstorm.
